T-Gas Ltd: Categorisation of Entry levels into the Gas Industry

Category 1

Engineers that hold current ACS Gas Engineering or ACOP's (requirement before ACS) qualifications, or have been current, are entitled to renew their certificates, then add on any additional elements - e.g. Central Heating Boilers (up to 70kw net) and Water Heating Appliances (CEN/WAT), Cookers (CKR1) etc.

CLICK HERE to see appliance categories available.

Category 2: Guild of Gas Fitting Operatives

Engineers who do not hold any formal gas qualification, but are employed within the plumbing/heating and ventilation industries fall into this category.

The applicant is requested to complete 2 weeks formal training in gas safety within the Centre, and then to complete a portfolio of gas work, carried out with a registered installer, for a minimum of 6 weeks.

On completion of the portfolio, to the satisfaction of the Centre, the applicant can continue to ACS CCN1 (Basic Gas Safety), adding appliances with the relevant training required. The cost of assessment is included in the price.

Category 3

Also under the auspices of the GGFO, this category is available to individuals who have no plumbing or gas qualifications. The category is designed for those who require a change in career.

The course requires a period of 3 weeks formal training in gas safety within the Centre, and then to complete a portfolio of gas work carried out with a registered gas engineer for a minimum period of 10 weeks.

On completion of the portfolio to the satisfaction of the Centre, the applicant will be put forward for 'The Guild of Gas Fitting Operatives'. The GGFO is a gas qualification recognised by UKAS to allow access to ACS gas qualifications.

On completion and certification of the GGFO, the applicant will then be put forward for the relevant ACS courses, i.e. CCN1, HTR1 etc.

  • All applicants fall into one of these three categories.
  • Applicants who fall into Category 1 will hold current ACS or ACOP, or current gas engineering qualifications.

  • Applicants who fall into Category 3 are new entrants into the gas industry, who hold no formal qualifications in the gas/plumbing or heating/ventilation industries.
  • If you are unsure of which entry level you hold, please contact the centre and speak to one of our representatives.
  • Applicants must provide information (e.g. old certificates) regarding their experience within the gas industry with either ACS/ACOP qualifications, or the application for assessment form provided by the Centre.
